Crazy Coach 4 The Records

Kevin Record

(aka Crazy Coach)

Moderation has never been a strong character trait for me. More is often better. So, my love of sport has always served as a positive addiction. I am happiest in motion – a poster child for Attention Deficit Hyper-Activity Disorder.

However, I’ve never considered my exercise addiction and desire to move as a disorder. Rather, it’s a healthy outlet that has propelled me to my happy places.

Bicycle touring became a part of my life in the summer of 2016, when I rode from Yorktown, Virginia to San Francisco, California to raise money (over $14,000) for the American Cancer Society.

Subsequent cycling tours followed over the next eight summers: Deadhorse, Alaska to Calgary, Canada for Parkinson’s in 2017; Oslo, Norway to Barcelona, Spain for childhood cancer research in 2018; Czech Republic to Austria, Hungary, Slovenia, Italy, Croatia and Montenegro for Alzheimer’s in 2019; San Diego to Jacksonville Beach for the Wounded Warrior Project in 2020; The Continental Divide Mountain Bike Ride from the Canadian border to the Mexican border for Mental Health Awareness in 2021; circumnavigations of Iceland and Ireland for pediatric cancer research (Cure Search Gold)  in 2022; Bar Harbor, Maine to Seattle, Washington for Multiple Sclerosis in 2023; and Japan, as well as both the east and west coasts of the United States, for the American Heart Association in 2024.

Overall, I’ve raised more than $50,000 for various charities while cycling over 30,000 miles on this planet.

When I’m not riding my bicycle, I enjoy training and competing in triathlons. In 2022, I completed Ironman Florida, and in 2023, I finished Ironman Chattanooga. Both of those events required a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a 26.2-mile marathon. In 2024, I completed a combination of Ironman Cozumel (swim, bike) and the Jacksonville Marathon in honor of a friend whose mom was murdered in Jacksonville.

My endurance resume also includes the completion of sixteen 26.2-mile marathons.

Tennis has been a lifelong passion of mine. For the last 23 years, I have served as the head coach of both the boys and girls tennis teams at Leon High School. We’ve been fortunate to win two state championships, as well as over 20 district titles. Both of my sons, Kyle (35) and Josh (30) enjoyed successful careers playing for me at Leon, thus completing a circle of life in tennis as I was blessed to play for my late, great father (the Original Coach Record) at Huntington High School in New York.

As a four-year starter at Lynchburg College, I qualified twice for the NCAA Tournament and am humbled to be in the school’s Sports Hall of Fame.
